Trademarks and Football

You can apply for a trademark even before you have started to use your name or logo on products. This is called an intent-to-use trademark, and is often used by rising football stars to secure merchandising rights before they make their big break.

In one perfect example, in 2021 Patriots Quarterback Mac Jones was still a rookie. But he hedged his bets that he would become a household name by registering a trademark for MJ10 before he even started selling any merchandise.

Jones explained his reasoning in simple terms that can apply to any business looking to protect their brand name, logo, and image

"I just have them protected so that someone doesn’t buy them and then make me pay a lot more money for them.” - Jones.
